How effective is cycle tracking (including ovulation tracking) as a form of contraception?
Fertility awareness methods (FAM), including ovulation tracking, help track a woman’s menstrual cycle and the timing of when an egg is released from the ovaries (ovulation). FAMs are about 76% to 88% effective as a form of contraception. That means 12-24 women out of 100 women who use FAMs will get pregnant each year, depending on which method is used (the Temperature Method, Cervical Mucous Method, or the Cycle Tracking Method). Effective use of FAMs (tracking your fertility signs daily and avoiding intercourse or using birth control on fertile days) can decrease the likelihood of conceiving but there is still a chance that a woman can get pregnant.
